Trailer Hire Guidance
Trailer Hire Driving Licence Requirements To tow a trailer in excess of 750kg gvw, you need a licence with Categories B+C. If you passed your test before 1 January 1997, Categories B+C were part of the test. If you passed your test after this date, you will need to have taken an additional test for these categories.
Towing Vehicle
When considering car trailer hire, your handbook will tell you the maximum recommended towing weight, for your vehicle, for an un-braked and braked trailer. In all cases this cannot exceed 750kg gvw for an un-braked trailer and 3500kg gvw for a braked trailer. Your hitch should be 400mm from the ground, give or take 50mm. If not, the hire trailer will not be level, resulting in possible damage, and you will require a drop plate which we have for sale in our showroom.
Trailer Hire Selection
Our recommendation is to hire a slightly larger trailer if possible. Trailers always tow better if the load is properly balanced – you can’t adjust the balance if the load only just fits. A ramp tail is handy if you’re intending to load and unload wheeled machines. Hire a van trailer to protect your cargo from wet weather and make it more secure.
Trailer Hire Extras
Insurance: is your responsibility. Your car insurer may be able to add the car trailer hire to your existing policy or we can refer you to a specialist insurer who offers cover for short term hire. Security: most of our hire trailers are fitted with hitch locks. We also hire and sell a range of wheel clamps, Abus locks and security chains. All trailer hire are supplied with a spare wheel, camping trailers with covers and car trailers with winches.
